JC Alum Henry wins Walter Jones Trophy

Jones College athletics have a history of success. Robert Henry raised the bar even higher with his nationally-recognized award he earned last year as a member of the Bobcat football team.

During the 2021 football season, Henry put up some major stats as a freshman running back. He rushed for 495 yards over 81 carries, which comes out to average 6.1 yards per carry.

While those stats are impressive, they pale in comparison to his second season as a Bobcat. As the primary running back, Henry rushed for 1,302 yards. In the 10 games he played, he averaged 130.2 yards per game.

Henry led the nation in rushing touchdowns and managed to have a game of 219 yards on the ground. In short, Henry had a monster season that secured his place as the national leader in rushing yard.

The NJCAA would soon recognize these stats by making Henry the first ever recipient of the Walter Jones trophy. The award is given to the top JUCO football player of the year. And to put the cherry on top, Henry won the NJCAA offensive player of the year, which no Bobcat has ever won.

Henry has since moved on to the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). This season, he has rushed for 90 yards and scored his first rushing touchdown against the Army Black Knights.

“Not only did Jones develop me as a player, but it also developed me as a better person,” said Henry. “Being around the guys I got to be around; plus, great coaches helped that development.”
