Movie review: Damsel delivers new perspective to traditional fairy tales

The Netflix original film, “Damsel” takes audiences on a fantastical journey through a realm of magic, betrayal and courage.

Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, this PG-13 action adventure stars Millie Bobby Brown as Elodie, a young princess whose fate becomes intertwined with the destiny of her father’s impoverished kingdom. Her father (Ray Winstone) and stepmother (Angela Bassett) are visited by the rulers of a much wealthier empire asking for Elodie’s hand in marriage to their son. Out of duty to her family and their loyal subjects, Elodie agrees to wed the wealthy prince in exchange for gold that will be given to her father to rescue their kingdom from a lifetime of poverty and hardship. However, her fairytale wedding takes a dark turn when she learns of the sinister ritual that she must endure of being sacrificed to a menacing dragon.

Once Elodie is thrown into the dragon’s lair and her fate appears sealed, she refuses to succumb to that fate passively. Instead, she embarks on a daring quest to defy expectations and carve her own destiny.

Despite its shortcomings in visual effects, Damsel excels in delivering a compelling story that resonates with themes of empowerment and self-determination. The narrative unfolds with a sense of urgency, keeping audiences on the edge of their seats as Elodie navigates through perilous obstacles in her quest for freedom from the angry fire breathing dragon. The tension builds steadily, culminating in a climactic showdown that is sure to captivate viewers of all ages.

This film offers a fresh perspective on traditional fairy tales, challenging conventional notions of helpless princesses awaiting rescue. Instead, it celebrates the courage of its heroine, making it a worthwhile watch for those seeking an exhilarating adventure with a strong female lead. Elodie serves as a commendable role model, especially for young viewers, showcasing resilience and courage in the face of adversity.
