Sawyer credits team bonding for softball team’s strong season

Fresh off a no-hitter against Mississippi Delta, Jones College sophomore pitcher Jayden Sawyer credits the team’s success to their strong chemistry and unity both on and off the field.

“We aren’t cliquish,” Sawyer said. “We’re all one big group, and that helps us all be on the same wavelength.”

Rather than dividing into smaller friend groups, Sawyer emphasized that the players prioritize building connections with everyone on the roster. This approach has helped the team communicate better during games and stay mentally locked in through tough moments.

“We hold each other accountable and support one another, no matter who’s out there,” she said.

Sawyer said several players have stepped up into leadership roles, but the player who immediately stood out to her was redshirt Sophomore Makynlie Jones.

“She’s very vocal, has a big presence, and is someone the team looks to physically and emotionally,” Sawyer said. “She’s that player who brings the energy and makes sure everyone is prepared.”

According to Sawyer, Jones’s influence extends beyond her performance on the field. Whether it’s through encouragement in the dugout or direction on the field, her leadership has had a visible impact on the team’s focus and morale.

Sawyer also shared insight on how the team has grown in their ability to make adjustments during games — especially when it comes to facing the same pitcher for multiple innings.

“Earlier in the season or last year, we might not have made those changes,” Sawyer said. “Now, we’re able to recognize what’s working and make adjustments quicker.”

She explained that this shift in approach has helped the Bobcats stay competitive in close games and capitalize on scoring opportunities. When it comes to high-pressure situations, Sawyer says the team is no stranger to stepping up when it matters most.

The Bobcats pushed through against 11th-ranked Gulf Coast State, securing a 2-1 win after a hard-fought five innings.

“In clutch moments, we make our adjustments and succeed with runners on, two outs,” she said. “We’ll do anything to refuse to lose.”

That mindset, shared by key players like Emily Mizelle, Makynlie Jones, Claire Andersen, Laney Little, and Sawyer herself, along with the team’s trust in each other, has become a major part of their identity this season. From their day-to-day practices to game-day intensity, the Bobcats continue to grow — together.

Head softball coach Tori Dew agrees. “This crew has been a joy to coach and grow with. Each of them have characteristics and different abilities that make them great. That is what makes this team so special. They build each other up and have found ways to put Jones and the team ahead of themselves.”

The team ends regular season with a 43-8 score overall and 21-5 in conference play. Jones hosts the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament May 4, 5 and 10. To keep up to date on the schedule, visit www.jcbobcats.com
