Band finishes semester with concerts

Known as the “Typhoon,” the Jones College band brings music, pride and energy to campus, all while offering great opportunities for interested students.

The Typhoon plays a crucial role in life at Jones as it brings students together by energizing and enlivening games and other campus events. Beyond the exciting performances, the band offers opportunities such as scholarships, music education and the chance to connect with people from a variety of backgrounds.

Karen Alba-Mendoza, a member of The Typhoon, said that she reflects positively on her time in the band because she gets the chance to communicate through the language of music.

“It’s like a language you can play for people, and they will understand no matter where they’re from,” Mendoza said.

Like many members of the band, Mendoza believes that while being part of The Typhoon definitely takes time and hard work, in the end, it is all worth it. Being part of the band allows students to challenge themselves and see their own personal growth, which, in the end, leaves them with a sense of accomplishment and pride.

“I love the final progress because you see what you can achieve by yourself while bonding with the people around you,” she said. “I love that it can challenge me in some ways while also learning about different cultural music.”

The Typhoon is currently guided and instructed by a passionate team, including Typhoon director Tamiko Bridges, percussion instructor Jared Potter, and brass instructor Kyle Matthees. Through dedication and hard work, the band directors at Jones College are shaping young musicians while creating a lively atmosphere for not only the band but for everyone who witnesses them perform.

Band director Tamiko Bridges believes that directing the band is more than just the music; it’s about preparing students for the future and ultimately continuing the legacy of The Typhoon.

“To me, it’s another group of students that are family,” Bridges said, “At the end of the day, I want to give them the best advice. I want to be the moral character that is exemplary in what I do.”

Bridges is committed to not only helping her students during their time in the band but also preparing them for the future. She strives to see her students grow in skill as well as character.

“When I walk through the door every day, it’s important to me that I set students up for success in their future. That’s what we do in our family,” she said. “We train up a child in the way they should go so that when they’re older, they’re successful. It’s my responsibility to make sure that I teach them and prepare them so that they’re more successful.”

The Jones College band has some upcoming performances this week. The concert and symphonic band will perform on Tuesday, April 21, at 6:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium. The sophomore recital will be held on Thursday, April 23 at 7 p.m. This recital will consist of all sophomores in the Fine Arts Department.
